QIB and QIIB are both full Islamic banks regulated by the Qatar Central Bank, and the choice between them comes down to transparency against scale. Qatar Islamic Bank (QIB), established by Decree No. 45 of 1982, reported QAR 221.1 billion of assets and QAR 4.835 billion of net profit for 2025, runs the larger app and the QAR 26 million Misk prize pool, but prices its financing inside the app or at the desk. Qatar International Islamic Bank (QIIB), established in 1991, publishes its term deposit ladder, 2.25% at one month to 4.00% at three years, and its finance rate cards on open web pages. If you want the price before you walk in, QIIB. If you want the widest digital bank, QIB. Our bank accounts guide for Qatar covers the basics both share.

Size, ownership and ratings in one section

QIB's about page describes it as the largest Islamic bank in Qatar and the first Islamic financial institution in the country, established by Decree No. 45 in 1982 and operating from 1983. Its 2025 key figures are QAR 4.835 billion net profit attributable to shareholders, QAR 221.1 billion total assets, QAR 138.5 billion of financing and QAR 142.7 billion of customer deposits. The group includes QIB UK in London (99.7% owned), Arab Finance House in Beirut, a Sudan branch opened in 2013, 49% of QInvest, 30% of Al Jazeera Finance, 49% of Aqar Real Estate and 25% of Bawabat Al Shamal, the developer of Doha Festival City. Its investor page lists ratings of A1 stable from Moody's, A with a negative outlook from Fitch, and AA- stable from Capital Intelligence, plus a USD 5 billion sukuk programme listed in Ireland.

QIIB's profile page describes a privately owned Islamic bank established in 1991, regulated by the QCB, built on trust, family and commitment, with a stated emphasis on branches and a guided approach alongside its digital channels. Its ratings page, dated more precisely than QIB's, lists Fitch at A long term, F1 short term, bb+ viability and stable outlook as of June 2026; Moody's at A2, P-1, baa3 baseline and stable as of June 2026; and Capital Intelligence at A+, A1, bbb+ stand-alone and stable as of March 2026. Its Sharia Supervisory Committee is chaired by Sheikh Dr Walid Bin Hadi, with Sheikh Abdoulaziz AlQassar and Sheikh Dr Mohammed Ohmain as members. QIIB's site does not publish headline balance sheet figures on the profile page; they sit in its financial reports section. Winner on size and ratings: QIB, by a clear margin on scale and one notch on each agency, with the caveat of Fitch's negative outlook.

Current and savings accounts: minimum salary, rates and prize draws

QIB's current account is described as linked to your salary, opened instantly in the QIB Mobile App with a QID scan and a selfie, with no fees stated on the page. Its savings product is the Misk Account, which pays profit on the average balance and enters you in draws worth QAR 26 million a year: twelve prizes of QAR 1 million, six monthly prizes of QAR 50,000 and twenty weekly prizes of QAR 10,000, with one entry per QAR 10,000 of minimum monthly balance and a three-month qualifying period for the grand draw. The draws are supervised by a representative of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. QIB does not publish the Misk profit rate on the page.

QIIB's current account is available in riyals or major currencies with a free debit card, monthly statement and cheque book, but you must attend a branch in person, and a salary certificate is needed for a cheque book. The age floor is 18 for Qataris and 21 for expatriates. QIIB's standard savings account pays a published 0.50% in riyals and 0% in dollars, branch-opened, riyals only. Its prize product is the Joud Account: two semi-annual prizes of QAR 1 million and twelve monthly prizes of QAR 100,000, a QAR 10,000 minimum balance to enter, profits paid quarterly, and each additional QAR 10,000 doubling your chances. Neither bank publishes a minimum salary for a basic current account on these pages. Winner on accounts: QIB for opening in minutes and the larger prize pool; QIIB for a printed savings rate and the bigger monthly prize. Our guide to prize savings accounts in Qatar compares the two draws in detail.

Term deposits: QIIB publishes the ladder, QIB does not

QIIB's term deposit page prints the full annual profit rate ladder above, in riyals and dollars, and requires a branch visit, age 18 and an original Qatari ID to open. QIB's deposit page lists four products, Flexi Certificate of Deposit with partial redemption, Growing Deposit for monthly saving, Special Deposit with multiple tenors, and Term Deposit with a low minimum and multiple currencies, all openable in the app, but publishes no rates on the overview page. The QCB deposit rate was 4.10% on 3 October 2026, which puts QIIB's three-year rate just below the central bank's overnight rate and its one-month rate well under it. Winner on deposits: QIIB on transparency; on the actual rate, you cannot tell until QIB quotes. Our QIB accounts and deposits review and our QIIB accounts and deposits review go product by product.

Financing: rate cards against quote-only pricing

QIIB publishes a fixed personal finance rate card, 5.60% for Wajaha, 5.70% for Deyafa, 5.75% for World and 5.85% for other segments, with a grace period of up to six months for Qataris and three for expatriates. Its vehicle finance page carries the same four rates with insurance at 2.4% and a worked instalment. Its mortgage page promises up to 80% of property value and up to 360 months but no rate. QIB publishes caps and features in detail, QAR 15,000 minimum personal finance, no processing fees, three-month grace, Credit Shield Takaful, home finance at up to 70% of value over 30 years for Qataris and 25 for expats with minimum salaries of QAR 10,000 and QAR 20,000, and vehicle finance with no administration charges, but no rate on any page; the number appears in the app calculator after you log in.

Both banks apply the same QCB ceilings, QAR 2 million including profit for Qataris and QAR 400,000 for residents, and both require an approved employer and salary transfer. QIB's advantage is process: same-day personal finance, instant finance in the app, and the option to postpone three instalments when taking a new finance. QIIB's advantage is that a reader can price the finance from the sofa. Winner on financing: QIIB for transparency, QIB for speed. Our four-bank personal finance comparison puts both alongside Dukhan and AlRayan.

Cards, apps and reach

QIB's app history is the longest in the market: the QIB Mobile App was upgraded to more than 300 services in 2021, QIB Lite launched in 2023 as an app for workers, QIB Junior launched in 2025 for children, and the Zaki chatbot handles queries. Account opening, deposit opening, personal finance and vehicle finance all run inside the app, and the Tamayuz tier has a 24x7 line on +974 4453 3000. QIB's card range runs from debit and prepaid through Marriott Bonvoy co-branded credit cards to charge cards, with an easy payment plan for purchases. QIB's branch and ATM pages are locator maps rather than counts, and its about page notes that branches reached ten back in 2003.

QIIB's digital menu is broad on wallets: Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Wallet, Garmin Pay and Fitbit Pay, Click to Pay, Fawran instant payments and visual IVR banking, plus an installment credit card, Avios-earning Himyan cards, a Himyan national debit card and a domestic worker card. Its site is ISO 27001 and PCI-DSS certified, which it prints in the footer. The branch and ATM lists are dynamic pages that did not render a count when fetched, and the bank's own profile stresses conveniently located branches as a deliberate choice. Winner on digital: QIB for end-to-end onboarding and finance in the app. Winner on wearables and card variety: QIIB.

  • QIB opens current, savings, Misk and deposit accounts fully in the app with a QID scan, a selfie and an OTP
  • QIIB requires an in-person branch visit to open a current, savings or term deposit account
  • QIB applies, approves and disburses personal and vehicle finance through the app
  • QIIB publishes the rate so you can run its online calculator before applying, but the application starts at a branch or through its digital finance channel
  • Both banks support Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Wallet; QIIB adds Garmin and Fitbit

Who should choose which

Choose QIIB if you are a saver who wants a printed rate for every tenor, a borrower who wants to know the profit rate before a branch meeting, or a customer who prefers a bank that still expects to see you in person. Its three-year 4.00% riyal deposit and its personal finance card are the two facts no other Qatari Islamic bank prints. Choose QIB if you want to open the account tonight, want finance disbursed the same day, bank for a household that includes children and domestic workers who need their own apps, or care about the strongest ratings and the deepest balance sheet. The Misk draw is a bonus, not a reason.

If you are undecided, open the account at QIB for the process and keep QIIB's deposit ladder as your benchmark when QIB quotes you a deposit rate; QIB will have to match a published number. Use our comparison tool to shortlist both against Dukhan and AlRayan, and read our four-bank ranking for the full market. Facts checked against qib.com.qa, qiib.com.qa, qcb.gov.qa on 3 October 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between QIB and QIIB?

Both are full Islamic banks regulated by the Qatar Central Bank. QIB, Qatar Islamic Bank, was established in 1982 and is the largest Islamic bank in Qatar, with QAR 221.1 billion of assets at the end of 2025 and an app that handles onboarding and finance. QIIB, Qatar International Islamic Bank, was established in 1991, is privately owned, publishes its deposit and finance rates on its website, and opens accounts in branches.

Which bank pays more on a term deposit, QIB or QIIB?

QIIB publishes its ladder: 2.25% at one month, 2.75% at three, 3.00% at six, 3.25% at one year, 3.50% at 18 months, 3.75% at two years and 4.00% at three years in riyals. QIB does not publish term deposit rates on its deposit overview page, so you must request a quote in the app or branch. Use QIIB's figures as the benchmark when QIB quotes.

Is QIB or QIIB better for personal finance?

QIIB is better if you want the rate up front: 5.60% to 5.85% depending on segment, fixed for the term, with a grace period of up to six months for Qataris. QIB is better if you want speed: same-day finance from QAR 15,000 with no processing fees, applied for and disbursed in the app, with a three-month grace period, but with the rate shown only inside the app calculator.

Which has the bigger prize draw, Misk or Joud?

QIB's Misk Account advertises QAR 26 million a year: twelve QAR 1 million prizes, six QAR 50,000 monthly prizes and twenty QAR 10,000 weekly prizes, with a QAR 10,000 minimum balance per entry. QIIB's Joud Account offers two semi-annual QAR 1 million prizes and twelve monthly QAR 100,000 prizes with the same QAR 10,000 minimum. Misk has the larger pool; Joud has the larger monthly prize.

Can I open a QIIB account online?

Not on the pages we checked. QIIB's current, savings and term deposit pages each state that the customer must attend a QIIB branch in person with an original and valid Qatari ID. QIB, by contrast, opens current, Misk and deposit accounts in its mobile app using a QID scan, a selfie and an OTP, with the debit card delivered afterwards.
