No. QNB (Qatar National Bank) is a conventional bank, and since the Qatar Central Bank directed conventional banks to close their Islamic windows in 2011 it has had no Shariah-compliant retail product line in Qatar. Its deposits pay interest and its loans and cards charge it. If you want a halal salary account in Qatar, you have four fully Islamic banks licensed by QCB: QIB, Dukhan Bank, AlRayan Bank and QIIB. There is no Islamic version of QNB to switch to within the group, and no Islamic counter at a QNB branch. The decision is therefore binary, and the mechanics of moving are a salary transfer letter and one branch visit. Our Islamic banking guide for Qatar explains what the four Islamic banks do differently; this article answers the QNB question directly.

What makes a bank halal, in one paragraph

A conventional bank lends money and charges interest on it, and borrows money (your deposit) and pays interest on it. Both legs are riba in the classical sense: a return on money itself, fixed in advance and unconnected to any asset or trade. An Islamic bank does not lend money for a return. It buys and resells assets (murabaha), leases them (ijara), or invests your deposit in a pool and shares the actual profit (mudarabah or wakala), under the supervision of a Shariah board that reviews contracts. The money may look similar in your app, but the contracts behind the balances are different, and that is the whole point.

There is a second category in many countries: conventional banks with an Islamic window, where a separate book of Shariah-compliant products sits inside a conventional institution. Qatar is one of the few markets that abolished that category outright. That history is why the QNB question has a short answer here and a long answer in Dubai or London.

Why QNB has no Islamic window: the 2011 QCB separation

In 2011 the Qatar Central Bank instructed conventional banks in Qatar to stop offering Islamic banking through windows and to wind those operations down, leaving Islamic banking to fully Islamic institutions. Before that, QNB and other conventional banks ran Islamic branches with their own branding. After it, the Islamic books were closed or run off, and the market split cleanly into conventional and Islamic banks with no hybrid. We have not reproduced the circular number or its text, because we did not fetch the original document for this piece; our explainer on why Qatar banned Islamic windows goes into the directive and its reasoning.

The practical consequence is simple. If a bank in Qatar is not one of the four fully Islamic banks, it offers no halal deposit, no halal financing and no halal card inside Qatar. That applies to QNB, Commercial Bank, Doha Bank, Ahli Bank and the foreign branches alike. It also means a QNB customer cannot ask the branch for the Islamic version of a product, because the branch has none to offer.

What QNB's own site shows in October 2026

QNB's Qatar personal banking pages returned an application error on each attempt on 6 October 2026, so we could not quote its deposit or loan pages. The group network page that did load lists QNB's presence across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East, and names four exclusive service brands: QNB Capital, QNB Private, QNB First and QNB Financial Services. None is described as Islamic. QNB Financial Services also appears on the Qatar Stock Exchange's broker list, licensed for client trading, liquidity provision, market making and margin trading. Margin trading is a conventional product: it is a loan against securities on which interest is charged, and a Muslim investor using QNBFS as a broker should decline it.

QNB's subsidiaries abroad are a separate question. The network page lists Türkiye, Egypt, Tunisia and others as subsidiaries or associates, and some banking groups do run Islamic windows or participation subsidiaries in markets that permit them. We did not verify any such product for this article, so if you are a QNB customer outside Qatar, check the local entity's own Shariah board page rather than assuming the Qatar rule applies.

Which banks in Qatar are fully Islamic

Four banks hold a QCB licence as Islamic banks and run every product under a Shariah board: QIB, Dukhan Bank, AlRayan Bank and QIIB. A fifth institution, Lesha Bank, is an Islamic bank licensed in the Qatar Financial Centre rather than by QCB and serves investment clients rather than salary accounts. The table shows the salary-account entry points each bank publishes; where a bank does not publish a figure on the pages we fetched, the cell says so, and our individual reviews carry the detail.

BankPublished salary account entry pointWhere to read more
QIBNot stated on the pages fetched; app-led account opening, Misk prize savings, Lite and salary accountsQIB accounts and deposits review
Dukhan BankQAR 10,000 minimum salary stated for vehicle finance; Thara'a prize savings accountDukhan Bank accounts and deposits review
AlRayan BankCurrent account with salary transfer: QAR 4,000 for Qataris, QAR 10,000 for non-Qataris (QAR 15,000 if employer not approved); savings initial deposit QAR 20,000 Qataris, QAR 50,000 non-QatarisAlRayan Bank accounts and deposits review
QIIBNot stated on the pages fetched; publishes financing rate cards by segment (Wajaha, Deyafa, World)QIIB accounts and deposits review

AlRayan's numbers come from its retail tariff PDF, which also states that current accounts without salary transfer require an initial deposit of QAR 100,000 for Qataris or an initial fixed deposit of QAR 350,000 for non-Qataris. The profiles for QIB, Dukhan Bank, AlRayan Bank and QIIB carry the full house verdicts, and our bank account comparison for Qatar puts the published rates side by side.

What to do with the QNB products you already hold

A QNB current account that pays no interest holds no riba, and you can keep it open while you transition; the problem is a savings or fixed deposit that credits interest. The common scholarly position is that interest received should not be kept for personal benefit but given away to a charitable cause without expecting reward, and the account closed or converted. Note the amount from your statements, give it away, and move the balance.

A QNB personal loan or car loan cannot be converted into an Islamic contract at QNB. The halal route is a buyout: an Islamic bank finances the settlement amount under its own murabaha or tawarruq contract and you repay the Islamic bank instead. Each of the four Islamic banks runs buyouts subject to its own salary and cap rules, and the process is the same in outline for a car loan or a home loan: settlement letter from QNB, approval from the Islamic bank, payment between the two, and release of the mortgage. A QNB credit card should be paid down to zero and closed, then replaced with a covered card from an Islamic bank.

How to move your salary account from QNB, step by step

  • Open the new account at your chosen Islamic bank first; QIB and Dukhan Bank both advertise app-based or same-day opening, and AlRayan publishes its salary thresholds so you can check eligibility in advance
  • Ask the new bank for its salary transfer letter template addressed to your employer, with the new IBAN, and check whether your employer is on the bank's approved list, which at AlRayan changes the minimum salary from QAR 10,000 to QAR 15,000 for non-Qataris
  • Submit the letter to your HR or payroll department and confirm the payroll cut-off date so you know which month's salary lands where
  • Leave the QNB account open for one full salary cycle with enough balance to cover any standing orders or card settlements that have not yet moved
  • Move standing orders, Fawran links and utility payments to the new account, then request QNB's clearance letter and close the account if you have no remaining products with the bank

Our step-by-step switching guide for Qatar covers the timing traps, including end-of-service and allowance payments that employers sometimes route separately, and explains what the salary transfer qualifies you for at each bank once it lands.

Our view

If you are a Muslim employee in Qatar whose salary goes to QNB because that was the employer's default, move it. The four Islamic banks between them cover every product you are likely to need, the transfer is administrative rather than financial, and there is no halal product inside QNB waiting to be discovered. Pick the Islamic bank by what you need next: AlRayan if you want published pricing formulas, QIIB if you want a published financing rate card, Dukhan if you want published deposit payouts, QIB if you want the largest branch and app footprint.

If you hold QNB shares rather than QNB accounts, the question is different: QNB does not appear in the QE Al Rayan Islamic Index constituents file dated 1 September 2026, and a conventional bank's income is interest by definition, so the usual screens exclude it. Our guide to opening a brokerage account in Qatar for halal investing covers what to hold instead. Frequently asked questions

Does QNB have an Islamic banking division in Qatar?

No. QNB ran Islamic branches before 2011, but the Qatar Central Bank directed conventional banks to close their Islamic windows that year, and QNB's Qatar retail business has been conventional only since. Its site lists QNB Capital, QNB Private, QNB First and QNB Financial Services as service brands; none is Islamic.

Is keeping a QNB current account haram if it pays no interest?

A current account that pays no interest does not generate riba for you, and many scholars allow holding one for salary receipt and payments where needed. The concern is the bank's use of the funds, which is why most advice is to move to an Islamic bank when a practical alternative exists. In Qatar four alternatives exist, so the transition is straightforward.

What should I do with interest already credited by QNB?

Do not keep it for personal benefit. The widely held position is to give the interest to a charitable cause without expecting reward, because the money was not lawfully earned, then close or convert the account. Note the amounts from your statements so you can account for them accurately.

Which Qatari banks are fully Islamic?

QIB, Dukhan Bank, AlRayan Bank and QIIB are the four fully Islamic banks licensed by the Qatar Central Bank. Lesha Bank is an Islamic bank in the Qatar Financial Centre serving investment clients. Every other bank operating in Qatar, including QNB, Commercial Bank, Doha Bank and Ahli Bank, is conventional with no Islamic window.

Can I use QNB Financial Services to buy halal shares?

You can place orders through any of the seven QSE-licensed brokers, including QNBFS, and the halal question attaches to the shares you buy rather than the broker's parent. Decline margin trading, which QNBFS is licensed to offer and which is an interest-bearing loan against securities. Stick to cash purchases of screened stocks.

How long does a salary transfer from QNB to an Islamic bank take?

Usually one payroll cycle. You open the new account, hand your employer the new bank's salary transfer letter, and the next salary lands in the new account if you beat the payroll cut-off. Keep the QNB account funded for one cycle to cover anything that has not yet moved, then close it with a clearance letter.
